SCC Arbor Day Celebration
On Tuesday, April 26, SCC celebrated Arbor Day with a guest lecture by Missouri Department of Conservation Urban Forester Mark Grueber, followed by the presentation of SCC's official Tree Campus USA Certification plaque! This was quite an honor for SCC, and we are one of the first three colleges to be Tree Campus USA certified in the state of Missouri. Mad props to our SCC Tree Advisory Committee, which includes my fellow blogger Dan Porter.
Spring Fling
Every spring, SCC Student Activities puts on Spring Fling, a two-day event for the SCC campus that includes a live band performance, games, free food and giveaways. It's made to be outside, but unfortunately with all of the terrible weather we've been having they had to move it inside. There was still a pretty decent turnout though, and I manned the HLC/NCA Self-Study Pop-A-Shot booth, where we gave out free Tootsie Pops with NCA/HLC facts on it and "Get in the Game" basketballs to anyone who scored 30 or more points.

Student Film Festival
Last week marked the third annual SCC Student Film Festival, which included film submissions from local high school students and SCC students. At the last minute, I stood in for one of the judges for the festival, and I had a lot of fun doing it! I was pretty impressed with the films we viewed, and even more so with our winners.
There were five different categories, including documentary, comedy, drama, animation and music video. The animation category was by far my favorite - it was cool to see how creative the students could get! And I still don't know how they do it!
I also got to help out at the awards ceremony, which was also a lot of fun. In fact, I even got to announce the winners of my favorite category. :) We also got to watch all of the award winners, which included one of my favorites, "Table 3," which was produced by SCC students.

Student Film Festival

This was the only event that I did not attend last week, mostly because A) I needed a break and B) I knew I had to be up early the next morning for the Wellness Festival. But, this is also an annual event put on by Student Activities for the students. At the banquet, students are provided with a free dinner and they are presented with their awards certificates, including GPA and Outstanding Student awards. Check out the photos from that night.

This year was our 19th annual SCC Spring Wellness Festival, including a 10K Race, 3-Mile Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run. We had a total of 565 runners/walkers participate in the event, and more than 1,000 people total were on campus for the event. This was my second year on the Wellness Festival Committee, where my job is to coordinate the 70+ volunteers for the event. It's a lot of work, and it's very hectic the week before the event, but it's also a lot of fun.
While I do enjoy my job as the volunteer coordinator, probably my favorite part of the Wellness Festival is when I get to escort our mascot, Scooter McCougar. This year, I got to ride on Bob Ronkoski's (SCC Director of Public Safety) golf cart (BONUS!) as we took Scooter on the 10K course to cheer on the runners. It's amazing what a cougar mascot can do to lift the people's spirits - both young and old alike!

And you've always got kids like this who just love Scooter!The SCC Spring Wellness Festival is truly a cool event for the community, and if you haven't participated in it yet, I'd highly recommend doing so next year. Who knows, you could be like my friend Ashley who was surprised to find out she won second place in her age category and eighth place overall for females in the 10K Race!
Coming Up
So finally, after all that craziness, it's relatively back to normal around here in Marketing and Communications. We only have a few big events left in the school year, including a screening of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in Legacy Park in Cottleville at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13. Tickets are $5 for SCC students, faculty and staff with ID and $7 for general admission. Ticket sales will benefit SCC Student Senate. Plus there's a character costume contest!
And lastly, the 23rd SCC Commencement Ceremony, which is at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, and will feature keynote speaker Missouri Governor Jay Nixon.
Then shortly after that, summer classes will begin and I will finally have time to focus on some of my more big-picture projects! So, happy May, everyone! Here's to hoping for some better weather in our forecast!
UPDATE (9:08 a.m. 5/4/11): I just realized that this blog post marked the exact date of the one-year anniversary of my blog! Just thought I'd mention that... and how ironic it is that I managed to post on the exact same date one year and 37 posts after my very first blog post ever! I've had a lot of fun with this blog, and I just hope they let me keep doing it for another year! :) Thanks to all my readers!
